Making Home Improvements Easy and Affordable

Every home is different, and as a result, every home can be improved in different ways. This is part of the reason why a Home Energy Assessment should be your first step towards making home improvements or energy efficiency upgrades. As part of the assessment, our Registered Energy Advisors will evaluate the energy efficiency of your entire home, which provides them with enough information to draw up a list of suggestions for how your home could improve its level of energy efficiency. These suggestions are specific to each home, and rely on the information gathered in the assessment to determine their usefulness.

Our advisors rank the list of suggestions in terms of their cost-effectiveness, allowing you to make an informed decision regarding your plans for home upgrades or home remodelling. The assessment also allows you to see the expected financial and energy savings of each suggested home improvement, which helps significantly when drawing up a budget or planning for future upgrades.

Quite often the most cost-effective way that a home can become more energy efficient is through simple and affordable home improvements, such as sealing air leaks or installing a smart thermostat. However, with a Home Energy Assessment, you can know every possible way that your home could be improved, including unusual solutions to certain problems. For example, your home may suffer from window leaks, which may be greatly reduced by installing an often-overlooked product called a Magnetite window retrofit.

BSG also offers free phone consultations to help you plan for future home improvements, and our Registered Energy Advisors are happy to talk with you and guide you towards the next step in your home renovation or home remodelling process.

What Other Homeowners are Doing

Our friends at Great Northern Insulation recently conducted a survey which included feedback from past customers, and over fifty percent of homeowners answered that they made improvements to their home’s insulation in the last two years. Over 39 percent of homeowners answered that they made home improvements in order to improve energy efficiency, and 16 percent said they were chasing solely after rebates.

Many of our customers are happy to take advantage of the available rebates, as up to $5,000 is available from both Union Gas and Enbridge for homeowners who make energy efficiency improvements. BSG’s Registered Energy Advisors can not only assist in getting your home qualified for these rebates, but they can also help you determine which rebates would be the most optimal for you to aim towards. This means that you are able to make the biggest improvement to your home’s energy efficiency for the smallest up-front investment.

We recently had a customer in an older home that was concerned about their home’s level of insulation and leakiness; but after a simple Home Energy Assessment, every area of their home that could use an improvement was identified and categorized - so that an effective solution could be put into place. For this particular customer, we suggested they make attic insulation and airtightness improvements, as our advisors determined it would be the most cost-effective home renovation they could make.

After having Great Northern Insulation do a fresh install of some more-effective attic insulation, the customer used our map of their home’s air leaks and a caulking gun to help improve their building envelope. By making these improvements, the customer not only saw an improvement in utility cost, but they also mentioned that their home became less drafty and more comfortable, and that unwanted odours and smoke from their neighbours was less of an issue.

The Importance of a Registered Energy Advisor When Home Remodelling

Whether you are making boiler repairs, window replacements, or are improving the level of insulation in your attic, a Registered Energy Advisor acts as your chaperone through planning and implementation process. Through a Home Energy Assessment, our advisors can become equipped with all the information about your home that they require, in order to guide you on your way towards home improvements and energy efficiency upgrades.

Before you start home remodelling or planning your home improvements, contact BSG and setup a time for our Registered Energy Advisors to come conduct a Home Energy Assessment. As your renovation and rebate experts, BSG’s advisors can prepare you for the expected costs and completion times of all your home remodelling projects, and they can help you determine which home renovations or improvements would greatly improve the quality of life in your home for the smallest investment.
