The Enbridge Gas Home Efficiency Rebate Opportunity

Enbridge Gas Home Efficiency Rebate

Despite popular belief, there are still a number of home renovation rebates available for energy efficient upgrades to your home in Ontario. In May 2019, Union Gas and Enbridge Gas announced the revamp of their rebate program, now called the Home Efficiency Rebate. This initiative provides homeowners with up to $5,000 for home energy upgrades, including adding insulation, upgrading your furnace or water heater, replacing windows and doors, and air sealing your home.

Union Gas and Enbridge Gas Amalgamation

You may have noticed a small change on your gas bill recently! In late 2018, it was announced that Union Gas and Enbridge Gas would merge into one company, now referred to as Enbridge Energy Inc.  Since the companies amalgamated, they’ve created one rebate program to cover both Enbridge Gas and (former) Union Gas territories. Your gas bill should now have the Enbridge Gas logo on the top, instead of the former Union Gas logo.

Barrier Sciences Group is now happy to provide home energy audits to all of the Enbridge territory. That means that no matter where you’re located in southern Ontario, BSG services your region. You can contact us to schedule your home energy audit, or energy assessment, by calling our office at 1-866-333-3920, filling out a contact form, or speaking to our office staff through our live chat option on our BSG website.

Enbridge Energy Audits

Home Energy Upgrades

The Home Efficiency Rebate initiative offers Ontario homeowners up to $5,000 in rebates for energy efficient upgrades. A qualifying step for the Home Efficiency Rebate is to have an energy audit, or energy assessment, completed on your home both before any renovations are completed, as well as after you’ve completed your upgrades. A major component in the energy audit is having a blower door test completed on your home. The blower door test will calculate how much air is leaking from your home, which is a large factor in determining the overall energy rating of your home.

The Home Efficiency Rebate offers up to 90% of the Enbridge energy audit back as part of your total rebates. Having an energy audit completed on your home is a great first step to determine which upgrades are best suited for your home. The energy audit will provide you with a complete list of recommended renovation upgrades that your home would benefit from. You’ll also receive an EnerGuide rating and an EnerGuide label, which tells you how energy efficient your home currently is, and how efficient it could be with the recommended upgrades.

Ontario homeowners can receive up to $5,000 back in home energy rebates through the Home Efficiency Rebate for things like attic insulation, basement insulation, furnace upgrades, exterior wall insulation, water heater upgrades, window and door replacement, and air sealing.

Energy Efficient Upgrades

Energy efficient upgrades not only improve the overall comfort of your home, they also help reduce your energy bills, increase air quality, and reduce your emissions. By having an Enbridge energy audit completed on your home, you will gain an understanding of where your home could benefit from energy efficient improvements.

These energy efficient upgrades, such as adding insulation or air sealing, will make your home more airtight. By making a tighter home, you’re allowing less outside air into your home which will help reduce your energy bills, and make your home more comfortable overall. A blower door test will be conducted during your energy audit. While a blower door test is being conducted, a fan draws air from the inside of your home to the outside, forcing air back into your home through any cracks or leaks. While the fan is running, you’ll be able to feel the air moving back into your home. Common areas where you could feel leaks are around leaky windows or doors, through electrical outlets, or around the attic hatch. Now is the best time to complete upgrades to your home, as there are rebates currently available for most of the recommended upgrades!
