Energy Advisors Will Learn the Newest Version of EnerGuide at BSG

Published on March 29, 2018

If you’re currently an Energy Advisor, or looking to become one, and you want to keep well ahead of the curve, then Barrier Sciences Group has an EnerGuide instruction program for you. We offer professional courses to prepare for both the Foundations Level Exam and the Energy Advisor Exam. Both of these exams are required to become a Registered Energy Advisor.

The newest version of the EnerGuide Rating System (Version 15) will be taught as a part of both courses. Version 15 offers an improved rating system that adds more value to the existing home energy audits. Today, while Canada transitions to the new system nation-wide, some Advisors will continue to use the existing 0-100 rating scale depending on where they operate.

Barrier Sciences Group trains Energy Advisors for the future

In Ontario, the new version of the EnerGuide Rating System has been implemented province-wide. As such, Energy Advisors, both veterans and novices, must keep up with the latest changes and revisions. In fact, changes to the Ontario Building Code (coming in 2020 and 2022) are going to increase the demand for highly trained Advisors.

  • in 2020, air-tightness testing will be mandatory for all newly built houses
  • in 2022, air-tightness targets will be mandatory for all newly built houses

At Barrier Sciences Group, we’re training established Energy Auditors and aspiring Energy Auditors for the future. We train for all the necessary skills relative to testing and assessing. As well, BSG will train you to better communicate test findings to new homebuilders and new homeowners. The new EnerGuide label will also help in this process.

Under the umbrella of Natural Resources Canada, the old EnerGuide Rating System will be fully phased out by December 31, 2018. Going forward, energy performance and consumption will be assessed and rated in Gigajoules Per Year. It’s a measurement scale that can accurately gauge current performance and reflect any improvements.

Understanding the newest version of the EnerGuide Rating System

Barrier Sciences Group is already implementing ERS Version 15, using the new parameters when working with property owners throughout the province. Here, the objective for optimum energy performance is the lowest possible Gigajoule rating - in other words, the lower the annual rating, the better the energy performance.

The ultimate performance rating, of course, is ZERO Gigajoules Per Year. This rating is assigned to a residential home (or building) that produces as much energy as it actually consumes. These types of homes are identified as NET ZERO homes, and the building industry is working towards constructing all new buildings to meet these codes. But for now, any reduction in GJ per year shows improvement.
