What Is A Healthy Home?

what is a healthy home

Having a healthy home is important for everybody, regardless of whether you own or rent. Living in a healthy environment is not something anyone should have to sacrifice. Since everyone spends so much time in their homes, it’s important that all the occupants of the house are living in a healthy space.

What Is A Healthy Home?

A healthy home is a home that is insulated, dry, clean, safe, ventilated, maintained, pest-free, and energy efficient. A healthy home is important because it allows the occupants to remain safe and healthy in their living environment. Far too often an unhealthy home results in its occupants becoming ill.

In addition to the negative physical health concerns, an unhealthy home often leads to higher energy bills due to a home that cannot stay consistently warm or cool. Improving the energy efficiency of a home will result in a more comfortable and affordable living environment.

Insulated

A home that is well-insulated is a home that maintains consistent temperatures throughout every space and every floor. Insulation provides a much needed barrier from the outdoor environment, resulting in a comfortable living environment inside.

Air sealing is another major contributor to a healthy home. By air sealing and insulating, less unconditioned air is making its way inside, which means healthier indoor air.

Dry

Damp homes create a favourable environment for pests, health problems, structural issues, and mold and bacteria. It’s important to mitigate any moisture concerns as soon as they’re located to ensure a healthy living environment for your home and its occupants.

Safe

A healthy home is a home that is safe for everyone living in it. A safe home is a home that is free from any structural issues, fall or trip hazards, or chemicals. Be sure to store hazardous chemicals in a spot that is away from children or pets; repair any damages that could pose a risk to someone's health or safety; and keep paths clear of debris.

Ventilated

While having an airtight home is essential to a healthy home, it’s important that the home be properly ventilated to ensure fresh air is making its way into the home. This can easily be achieved through a heat recovery ventilator (HRV), or energy recovery ventilator (ERV). Both allow the proper amount of outside air into the home, resulting in exceptional indoor air quality.

Maintained

A maintained home is a healthy home. Keeping a maintained home means staying on top of any minor fixes or renovations that could impact the safety or health of your home.

Pest-Free

Pests cause many problems once inside a home. Having a pest-free home allows the home and its occupants to remain safe and healthy. A sealed home is a home that doesn’t allow pests to enter, which avoids the need/use of any harsh pesticides or chemicals.

Energy Efficient

An energy efficient home is a home that is comfortable, affordable, and healthy. An energy efficient home is a home that is well-insulated, air sealed, and uses energy efficient appliances. Living in an energy efficient home means that your home is using less energy to run, resulting in

How Can I Make My Home Healthy?

There are simpler tasks you can complete around your home to make it healthier, including wiping down frequently touched areas, removing dust and debris from floors and surfaces, and rectifying any safety issues or concerns throughout the home.

But what’s really important is making sure you have a healthy home that includes clean air, even temperatures, and a comfortable living environment for you and your family.

Why Is It Important To Build And Operate Healthy Houses?

A healthy home means its occupants are also safe and healthy. It’s important to operate a healthy house in order to protect those that live inside it. If you live and operate an unhealthy home, it can cause sickness to those that live within the house. In order to keep everyone healthy and safe, a home should be free from any moisture, be free from any hazards, and be comfortable.

What Makes A Home Comfortable?

A comfortable home is generally a home that is airtight, as there won’t be any drafts or temperature fluctuations. If you are currently living in an uncomfortable home due to differing temperatures or drafts, contact Barrier Sciences Group to schedule a whole home energy audit on your home.

As part of a whole home energy audit, a blower door test will be performed on your home. A blower door test is a diagnostic tool that will locate the air leaks around your home. It will also tell you how much air is leaking out of your home every hour. Air leakage is one of the largest factors in determining home energy efficiency.

An in-home energy audit is one of the most effective tools you can utilize for the energy efficiency rating of your home. It will help you determine how energy efficient your home currently is, while providing useful information on how you can improve the level of energy efficiency. The best part about an in-home energy audit is that you may also be eligible for rebates.

The Home Efficiency Rebate presents up to $5,000 to complete energy efficient upgrades to houses. The program, run by Enbridge Gas Inc., includes upgrades like insulation, air sealing, water heaters, windows and doors, and furnaces. In order to qualify for the Home Efficiency Rebate, you must be an active customer of Enbridge Gas or Union Gas. You must also live in a semi-detached, detached, or row townhome and heat your home with a natural gas furnace. If you’d like more information or are wondering if you qualify, call our office at 1-866-333-3920.
