Save energy costs with rebates in Ontario

By taking advantage of the Ontario energy rebates that are currently available, you can work to make your home more energy efficient for a lower cost. Whether you are doing large scale renovations, a small retrofit, or are upgrading your home while doing some repairs, you can save on energy use and utility costs by contacting BSG. Since our energy experts are also rebate experts, they can accurately suggest the best rebates for you to target and help guide you through the application process.

Home reno rebates are a fantastic way for you to save money while undertaking new home improvements. They make it easier for you to afford a more substantial upgrade, which in turn helps you to save on your energy costs in a more substantial manner than a smaller upgrade would. This allows you to see bigger energy savings due to your larger upgrades, and helps you to see a return on your investment even sooner.

If you would like to learn more about the rebate programs offered to Ontario homeowners, or if you have any questions about how energy efficiency upgrades improve a home, feel free to send us a message through our website. The Home Efficiency Rebate Program

With the newly launched Home Efficiency Rebate (HER) opportunity, both Enbridge rebates and Union Gas rebates have been combined into one. This is due to the fact that Enbridge Gas recently acquired Union Gas (and their rebates), so the two companies’ (rather similar) rebate programs have been combined into the new HER opportunity. The new program offers up to $5000 to Ontario homeowners who make energy efficiency improvements to their home, helping to make it the most well known of all the programs for Ontario energy rebates.

Although HER program is replacing the older Union Gas rebates and Enbridge rebates that were available, it will still be offered to customers of both Union Gas and Enbridge Gas. It also requires two home energy audits two qualify - one before any renovations have started, and one after they have completely finished. A home energy audit is an evaluation of a home’s energy performance, and is conducted by a registered energy advisor from a certified service organization. It provides both the homeowner and the contractor with all the information they need to make the most cost-effective home improvement possible.

As an example of the cash incentives that the HER opportunity offers: up to $2000 is available for upgrading your home’s exterior wall insulation to an R-Value of R20, $750 is available for furnace/boiler upgrades, and $200 is available for making an eligible water heater upgrade. There are also rebates for air sealing upgrades, attic insulation improvements, and even ENERGY STAR window replacements; all which make it easier for you to save on your energy bills.

How Energy Efficiency Upgrades Help you Save on Energy

Energy efficiency upgrades are the most effective way for a home to become cheaper to operate and have a lower environmental impact. Also, they are able to: improve your home’s interior comfort level and air quality, control your humidity levels and moisture build up, reduce your family’s risk of sick building syndrome, and even improve your market value when you decide the time has come to sell.

In most homes in Ontario, attic insulation improvements are the most cost-effective way to increase the effectiveness of a home’s building envelope. With a stronger and more airtight building envelope, temperature change between floors and rooms can be effectively managed, unwanted drafts can be controlled, and heated/cooled air stays exactly where it belongs - inside your home. This means you get to save on energy costs and reduce your carbon footprint, all while enjoying a more comfortable home.

With how effective energy efficiency upgrades are in any home or building, and with the ease of accessibility for many Ontario energy rebates, there has never been a better time to start improving your home. An energy efficient home is not only more comfortable and cheaper to operate right now, but it will also be better prepared for the future.

A Net-Zero home for example, is able to produce the same amount of energy that it consumes over a twelve month period. It does this by combining a super-insulated and airtight building envelope, with an onsite renewable energy source such as solar. This makes it substantially less affected by rising energy prices or future energy shortages.

Other than Enbridge & Union Gas Rebates, What Other Programs are out There?

Although the HER program often takes control of the spotlight for all the Ontario energy rebates that are available, there are other programs that Ontario homeowners can use to make it more affordable for them to make energy efficiency improvements

For Toronto homeowners, there is the Home Energy Loan Program (HELP), which offers a low-interest loan for those who wish to improve the effectiveness of their home’s energy performance. It is available in 5,10, and 15 year terms, and is attached to the home and not the homeowner. This means that if the current homeowner decides to sell before the loan is fully paid off, the new homeowner instead takes on the remainder of their payments, and gets to move into a home that has already had energy efficiency improvements made.

The Candian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) has the Green Home Premium Refund, which offers qualified homeowners who buy, build, or renovate for energy efficiency a refund on their CMHC mortgage premium. The refund is also percentage based, meaning that the more you invest, the more you save on your energy costs.
