Stacking Energy Efficiency Rebates

stacking energy rebates

The government wants you to make your home more energy efficient (and we’re right there with them on that). So they’re encouraging green renos with multiple grant and rebate programs, which you can stack together to get the most money back.

There’s the Canada Greener Homes Grant, which can get you up to $5,600 back. And there's the Enbridge Home Efficiency Rebate, which can get you up to $5,000, for a combined total of up to $10,600 per eligible home. You can use the same pre- and post-work energy assessment for both programs.

How does stacking rebates work?

You can apply to both programs, you just can’t get money back from both for the same improvement. But you can pick and choose which one will get you the greatest rebate for a particular improvement. For example, with Greener Homes, you can get up to $1,800 for insulating your attic, while the Home Efficiency Rebate maxes out at $750.

The Home Efficiency Rebate requires that you make at least two eligible improvements to qualify for rebates, while the Canada Greener Homes Grant only asks for one. However, the Home Efficiency Rebate offers a bonus for multiple retrofit upgrades, so if you’ve got a bigger reno happening, keep that in mind.

Which rebate program will get the most money back?

Here’s a quick look at which program offers the best reimbursement per improvement.
