A Better Understanding of the Union Gas Home Reno Rebate Program

Published on March 07, 2018

The main benefit of Union Gas Home Reno Rebate Program is the substantial cash rebate that helps homeowners to upgrade home energy efficiency. Union Gas has partnered with the Ontario government to provide rebates of up to $5,000 for energy improvements, upgrades, and retrofits.

Ontario property owners can qualify for significant rebates when upgrading home insulation. As part of the Green Ontario Fund, the rebates are designed to offset the upfront costs of insulation upgrades. The aim is to markedly improve energy efficiency and therefore reduce gas emissions.

Property owners get the benefit of Union Gas Home Reno Rebate Program

Although property owners can choose from a number of rebates through the GreenON incentive program, the Union Gas program tends to offer more benefits. In fact, GreenON actually requires more renovation work to be done in order to capture full rebate amounts. As well, the process of qualification is different, as is the claims process. Finally, GreenON has less work scope available.

The Home Reno Rebate Program covers a broad range of upgrades (at least two upgrades must be performed). HRRP is only available to residents who live in a Union Gas area. With multiple rebate offerings, Union Gas allows homeowners much more flexibility in the type of insulation work undertaken. Rebates are also based on the level of R-Value that’s installed.

HRRP requires a home energy pre-assessment and post-assessment in order to qualify. Both of the assessments are performed through a registered Energy Advisor (under Natural Resources Canada). Thorough assessments allow for an accurate before/after picture, ensuring the best return-on-investment. When upgrades are completed, an EnerGuide label confirms performance.

Another benefit of the Home Reno Rebate Program is that it includes much more than just home insulation.

Rebates are also available for:

  • furnaces
  • boilers
  • air conditioners
  • washers
  • freezers
  • fridges
  • much more!

Importantly, this program requires at least two upgrades to quality, as well as the two energy assessments. This is ideal for homeowners planning to make several upgrades.

With the HRRP, there are benefits to doing a pre-audit and post-audit

The Home Reno Rebate Program requires a pre-upgrade audit and post-upgrade audit in order to properly assess the before/after performance of the home. These audits will allow for the most effective upgrades and retrofits to be performed while delivering the best possible results.

With a qualified Energy Advisor on hand, the most cost-effective retrofits are performed first, and then followed by the next priorities - all depending on the project budget. Each energy retrofit is expected to provide performance enhancement, which is measured by the post-upgrade audit.

A comprehensive energy audit will set the stage for upgrades and retrofits that deliver results: improved energy efficiency; reduced energy usage; cost savings on utilities; and better comfort for residents. With quantifiable results, the post-upgrade audit meets all of HRRP requisites.

Taking advantage of the benefit of Union Gas Home Reno Rebate Program

Government incentives and rebates make it possible for property owners to dramatically reduce energy consumption while reducing Ontario’s overall carbon footprint for many years to come.

The Union Gas HRRP supports homeowners (and business owners) in undertaking energy upgrades and retrofits that will make a demonstrable difference, both short term and long term.

The Canada Greener Homes Grant offers home efficiency renovation grants up to $5,000.

Homeowners Canada-wide are eligible for the Canada Greener Homes Grant, announced on May 27, 2021. This new incentive offers up to $5,000 in grants for home efficiency retrofit renovations, plus a $600 reimbursement for pre- and post-work EnerGuide evaluations. Eligible retrofit scopes include home insulation, heating, doors, windows, photovoltaic solar panels, resiliency measures, and thermostats.
